Angie's Recipe for Healthy Eating Success

Angie Stone

Nine years ago, I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Like a lot of people living with the disease, getting my diabetes under control wasn't so easy at first. Back then, I was in complete denial about my condition and the importance of taking my medication, changing my diet, and getting more exercise. I did not fully understand the importance of changing my diet and was unaware of the long-term effects of the foods I loved, as opposed to healthier alternatives.

After speaking with a trusted doctor and nutritionist, I began to realize that there are a variety of healthy ways to continue enjoying great Southern food—the food I love and grew up with. I started by eating smaller portions, gave up routinely sprinkling extra salt on my food, and tried removing the skin from low-fat meats like chicken and turkey. Surprisingly, incorporating this diet change as well as other changes into my lifestyle was not as difficult as I thought. If you make these basic changes in your own personal diet, I truly believe that many of you will also feel the same way!

Diabetes Fact
According to the American Diabetes Association, African Americans are 1.6 times more likely to have diabetes as non-Hispanic whites.

I want you and our community to be fearless about facing diabetes. Just because you live with this condition does not mean you have to suffer from it! Remember, managing diabetes is possible with the proper medical support and a healthy lifestyle. Like me, you too can lead a healthy, happy life with diabetes.
