Diabetes Alert Day
The American Diabetes Alert Day is a one-day, "wake-up" call to inform the American public about the seriousness of diabetes.1 The American Diabetes Association encourages people to take the Diabetes Risk Test and find out if they are at risk for developing diabetes.1 American Diabetes Alert Day is observed on the fourth Tuesday of every March. The 22nd annual American Diabetes Alert Day will take place on Tuesday, March 23, 2010.
According to the , African Americans are 1.6 times more likely to have diabetes as non-Hispanic whites.
The awareness day seeks to encourage people to take the Diabetes Risk Test. This test asks people to answer seven questions about potential risk factors for diabetes including: weight, age, lifestyle, and family history.1 Those who score ten or more points are at a high risk for type 2 diabetes and are encouraged to see a healthcare professional for further evaluation.2
