Managing Your Type 2 Diabetes With Exercise

Build Your Type 2 Diabetes Exercise Plan

As a person with type 2 diabetes, there's lots to think about when starting an exercise routine. But by creating a plan ahead of time, you can take it step-by-step, and come up with a plan that you can enjoy and maintain. Remember, the first thing to do before starting to exercise is to speak with your healthcare provider. They will let you know which types of exercise will work best for you, and how your medications may need to be adjusted before you exercise.

Keep It Fun, Keep It Real

If you don't enjoy the exercise you choose, you may not do it as often as you might otherwise. Make sure you find an activity you enjoy. Once you know what you'll enjoy, make sure your type 2 diabetes exercise plan is realistic. If it's too hard or takes too much time, you may become discouraged.

Writing down your exercise plan may help you decide:

  • What kind of exercise you like to do (that your healthcare provider recommends)
  • What kind of warm up (stretching) and cool down you plan to do
  • What clothes or special items you may need
  • When you will exercise during the week and weekends
  • How long you plan to exercise each session
  • How you will exercise if the weather is bad
  • How you will measure your progress (your healthcare provider may be able to help)
